In January 2009, the Commission presented the main strategic objectives for the European maritime transport system up to 2018. The Strategy identified key areas where action by the EU will strengthen the competitiveness of the sector while enhancing its environmental performance.
In September 2016, the Commission published a Staff Working Document on the implementation of the EU Maritime Transport Strategy 2009-2018, presenting developments and achievements covering the period 2009-2015, whilst highlighting the areas where further work is needed. The documents provides an overview of all maritime transport policy activities and a starting point for the modernisation exercise in 2017
The Staff Working Document on the implementation of the EU Maritime Transport Strategy 2009-2018 focuses on five areas: (i) Maritime Safety and Security; (ii) Digitalisation and Administrative Simplification; (iii) Environmental Sustainability and Decarbonisation; (iv) Raising the Profile and Qualifications of Seafarers and Maritime Professions and (v) EU Shipping: A stronger global player.
