Description
Workshop: a Global Transport System in a Low Carbon Society
Wednesday 23 June 2010 from 9:00 to 12:30.
Albert Borchette Conference Centre, Rue Frossaert 36, 1040 Brussels
The Institution for Transport Policy Studies (ITPS) of the Japan International Transport Institute is currently finalising a study on how to achieve a Global Transport System in a Low Carbon Society by the year 2050. This is the first backcasting study conducted on a global scale.
The Commission will host a half day 'open' workshop, where representatives from the study team will discuss the study and its current findings. We invite you to participate in this workshop.
Draft Programme
9:00 - Registration
9:45 - Welcome and opening remarks by the European Commission
10:00 - ITPS presentation - background of the study, global study, overall view of the regional studies (speaker: Iwao Matsuoka or Yuki Tanaka)
10:30 - Results from the regional studies - North & Latin America, Europe and ASEAN (speakers: Lee Schipper, Holger Dalkmann, Sophie Punte)
11:30 - Panel discussion
12:15 - Conclusions
Taking into account of the European situation, the workshop will address, among others, the following questions:
- How do the results for Europe compare with other regions, and what does it mean for policy making;
- How far can developed regions go with technological and non-technological solutions and what are the obstacles they should overcome;
- How to deal with the need for behaviour change in order to reduce the amount of travel, and how to achieve such a behaviour change;
- What are possible common policies (i.e. common ground) for developed and developing regions;
- What are the "costs" of building transport systems for a low carbon society and in what way could developed regions help developing countries.
In order to participate, we invite you to send an e-mail to move-urbantransportec [dot] europa [dot] eubefore Wednesday 16 June 2010. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Please note that the workshop will be held in English and no interpretation will be provided.
