Join DG MOVE in Vienna for the green inland ports final conference, a two-day event in Vienna that will bring together European port and waterway authorities, policymakers, terminal operators, digital service providers, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders.
The conference will present key findings from the green inland ports study, and showcase the tools developed as part of the study supporting port decarbonisation. It will also collect stakeholder input for policy recommendations on sustainable port governance.

Description

In January 2023, the Commission launched the green inland ports study to support European inland ports in their transition towards becoming zero-emission and sustainable transport hubs connecting Europe. The study assessed the environmental impact of ports on their surroundings, examined the role of digitalisation in becoming more sustainable and identified opportunities to expand the use of inland waterway transport for urban mobility and short-distance transport.
As part of the study, the Green Inland Ports Environmental and Sustainable Management System (GRIP-ESMS) was developed to help ports reduce their environmental impact while improving operational efficiency. GRIP-ESMS provides guidance by monitoring emissions, assessing digital readiness, and setting priorities for simultaneously improving sustainability and economic performance. These tools are tested and validated with TEN-T inland ports across Europe, considering each port’s unique dimensions and situation.
