The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to gather input from stakeholders on the forthcoming evaluation of the Balanced Approach Regulation. This Regulation establishes a process for introducing noise-related operating restrictions at major European Union airports. It ensures that when Member States intend to address noise concerns, they consider a comprehensive range of measures before imposing air traffic restrictions. Furthermore, it guarantees that all relevant stakeholders are consulted throughout the decision-making process.

Despite significant advancements in aircraft noise reduction – with aircraft becoming approximately 75% quieter over the last 30 years – the increasing volume of air traffic means that many EU citizens continue to be exposed to high noise levels in the vicinity airports. Therefore, an effective noise management strategy is crucial to safeguard the well-being of individuals residing near airports. Such a strategy must carefully balance the interests of local communities, air transport users and those who rely on this mode of transport.

The call for evidence is available on the Commission’s ‘Have your Say’ portal, in all official EU languages. The Commission encourages all interested parties to participate in this consultation, by submitting their contributions by 26 February 2026
