The European Commission welcomes the outcome of the International Maritime Organization's 84th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting, which concluded on Friday 1 May in London.

The Committee agreed on the continuation of discussions at the next MEPC meeting in November 2026, with a view to further develop and agree on the adoption of a global framework to ensure the implementation of the IMO 2023 GHG Strategy.

The European Commission also welcomes the organisation of an extra intersessional meeting in September 2026, which will give an opportunity for the delegations to continue work on the development of guidelines and consider how to address concerns regarding the Net-Zero Framework.

The Commission stands firmly behind the shared objective of global shipping reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and will continue working with all parties to secure the adoption of an ambitious global framework at IMO.
