EU-wide digital maritime services – facilitating safe, secure and competitive shipping

The Commission recently revised The Union Maritime Information and Exchange System within the Vessel Traffic Monitoring Directive, to take into account technical enhancements, which enable tailor-made solutions for authorities and EU agencies involved in maritime surveillance, cross-sector and cross-border. Linking it with the National Single Window for reporting requiring information only once, these solutions will contribute to the competitiveness of European maritime transport through a more efficient use of existing resources and digital maritime services.

Today together with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) the Commission demonstrated the system and its services to Members of Parliament, members of the European Commission and EU agencies as well as maritime transport representatives from the industry and national authorities.

The demonstration showed examples of how the Maritime Information and Exchange System supports operational needs both in Member States and for EU Agencies, sparing them the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software, and hosting separate data integration – efficient use of existing resources.
