European Commission approves Dutch proposal on traffic distribution rules between Schiphol and Lelystad airport

Following consultations with all European Member States the European Commission has today adopted a positive decision on traffic distribution rules between Dutch airports Schiphol and Lelystad. EU air services Regulation (Regulation 1008/2008) provides that Member States may adopt traffic distribution rules between airports serving the same city or conurbation. As required by EU law, the Dutch authorities had notified the Commission, which had to verify that traffic distribution rules are in line with the requirements stipulated in EU Regulation 1008/2008. As outlined in the Dutch proposal to the Commission, the Netherland’s main airport Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has reached its maximum allowed aircraft movements of 500,000 per year. The aim of these rules is to move, on a voluntary basis, certain categories of flights from Schiphol to Lelystad.
