European urban mobility awards: Braga and Metropolia GZM rewarded for their green mobility actions

At a ceremony in Ghent last night, the European Commission presented the European urban mobility awards for 2022. Braga (Portugal) takes home the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK award 2022 for its remarkable activities in promoting sustainable urban mobility. Metropolia GZM, consisting of 41 municipalities in Silesia (Poland), wins the MOBILITYACTION award spotlighting innovative mobility solutions at a local university. Chernihiv, Kamianets-Podilskiy, Lviv, Poltava and Uzhhorod receive a special mention for Ukrainian participation in the 2022 campaign despite Russia’s ongoing aggression.

Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean said: "I would like to congratulate all finalists and winners. Your inspiring activities really show how cities and towns across Europe can improve people’s wellbeing by offering more sustainable mobility options for all. I also applaud the Ukrainian cities that actively took part in the 2022 campaign, despite Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine."

The city of Braga impressed the jury with its commitment to raise awareness of sustainable mobility among universities, local businesses and residents. During Mobility Week last September, the Portuguese city worked with over 100 companies to open streets for pedestrian use and construct interactive green spaces.

The jury selected the Polish metropolis Metropolia GZM for its comprehensive approach to transforming a carpark of the University of Silesia (Katowice) into a green, pedestrian-friendly space that not only benefits the university, but is also expected to decrease traffic nearby and encourage locals to use the freed up space.

The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK campaign runs from 16-22 September each year. Last year, almost 3000 towns and cities across 51 countries participated.
