Joint Press Statement on technical EC - Iran Workshop on Maritime Transport, Ports and Logistics

A technical workshop took place between the Iranian Ports & Maritime Organization (PMO) and the European Commission on 12-13 November 2018. The Iranian delegation was headed by Mohammad Ali Hasanzadeh, PMO Deputy Managing Director for Port and Economic Affairs and the European Commission delegation was headed by Maja Bakran, Deputy Director-General for Mobility and Transport.

The two sides exchanged views on current initiatives, developments and challenges in the field of maritime transport, ports and logistics.

  • In particular, as regards the environmental protection, both parties underlined the importance of alternative fuels in improving the environmental performance of vessels and of exchanging related expertise. Both sides welcomed the recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) initiatives towards reducing the CO2 emissions from ships, agreeing to aim at closer cooperation within the Organization.
  • The two sides exchanged views on the regulatory aspects pertaining to ports operations and efficiency. The importance of using digital technologies and better integrating maritime transport to the supply chain was raised, as well as the need to ensure the right skills and training for the maritime profession.
  • As regards safety, technical assistance provided by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) under the Black and Caspian Sea Project, aimed at raising safety, security and environmental protection standards, was acknowledged.
  • The two sides welcomed the participation of industry stakeholders from both sides, acknowledging the readiness to further develop business opportunities in this area, as well as the potential for cooperation between the respective maritime transport, ports and logistics industries.
  • The two sides emphasized the persisting need for investment towards strengthening the efficiency of the port and maritime sectors in meeting the global challenges of international trade.
