Number of people in the survey

The number of surveyed people should be a known data.

L

For each person in the survey:

  • average distance to work (km)
  • average time to work (minutes)
  • average time to home (minutes)

mode or combination of modes

The source of data for this indicator is today mainly coming from existing household mobility or transport surveys done by local authorities or national office of statistics. This means that for smaller cities, there is a risk for this data not to be available.

M

  • It should be checked whether other surveys (i.e. traffic and mean vehicle occupancy rate related) have been conducted at urban area level which provide the necessary information;
  • It should be evaluated the possibility to develop a local telephone survey to gather the information. If this will not be possible, e.g. unavailability of the necessary resources, take into consideration the possibility to develop an online survey. It would be better to have the data from an online survey instead of not at all, esp. as this is a non-core indicator.
  • SUMI anticipates that with the use of crowdsourcing & GIS, the data needed for this indicator becomes more and more available without having to conduct or refer to any survey.

* The column “Costs” provides a qualitative assessment of the budget (staff costs, time, costs for data acquisition, etc.) needed by a city/ urban area for gathering new quantitative data in absence of already available values. For each parameter, the assessment takes into account both the administrative costs and the costs related to searching, acquisition and processing of the needed data; these can be high (“H”), medium (“M”) or low (“L”), or a combination of a pair of them.
