L

-

Direct land use (ha); differentiated by mobility-related items

This indicator is defined by the proportion of land use, taken by all city transport modes, including direct and indirect uses.

Data sources are mainly:

  • Planning document and GIS models,

Public statistics.

M

  • Business registers and publicly available maps by third parties, such as OpenStreetMap, TomTom, Google Maps or Here Maps for features such as petrol stations, where proxy sizes need to be used.
  • It is encouraged to consider parking lots and petrol stations for representative results. Standard width can be assumed: to estimate the parking space usage, it is possible to multiply the number of parking spaces by their surface (~13 to 18 m2/car); to estimate the space used by petrol stations, it is possible to consider the average surface of a petrol station (for example, Brussels = 800 m2) and multiply it by the number of petrol stations registered.
  • Parking on the street is considered direct use, and it is already included in the road space.

Indirect land use (ha); differentiated by mobility-related items

* The column “Costs” provides a qualitative assessment of the budget (staff costs, time, costs for data acquisition, etc.) needed by a city/ urban area for gathering new quantitative data in absence of already available values. For each parameter, the assessment takes into account both the administrative costs and the costs related to searching, acquisition and processing of the needed data; these can be high (“H”), medium (“M”) or low (“L”), or a combination of a pair of them.
