In 2025, the European Commission will organise a conference allowing the transport sector and the Commission to listen to and better understand the expectations and concerns of young people in the European Union, and to hold a dialogue on their aspirations and perceived challenges with respect to jobs in the transport sector.
During the kick-off event of the 2024 European Youth Week , the Commission organised a breakout session on ‘Working in mobility and transport: dead end jobs or careers for a green future?’ , during which young people were asked about their expectations from their future employer regarding working conditions. The quick survey, which was not representative, showed that flexibility and a good remuneration are essential to young people today together with a respectful working environment.
In the context of an ageing workforce and labour shortages affecting the transport sector, the 12 young transport professionals who participated in the 2022 Youth Policy Dialogue on Jobs in Transport with the European Commissioner for Transport highlighted that declining working conditions and low wages are deterring young people from joining the sector. The high cost of professional training, for instance for pilots or train drivers, were also mentioned as a barrier to entry the transport job market.
