Today, the European Road Safety Charter, the largest civil platform dedicated to road safety and led by the European Commission, opened applications for the 2024 Excellence in Road Safety Awards. These awards celebrate the outstanding contributions made by organisations, authorities, and companies within the European Road Safety Charter community towards fostering safer roads across Europe.
The award categories for 2024 are:
- Best use of technology and innovation to promote road safety
- Best project supporting road safety for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists
- Best project supporting road safety in motorcycling
- Best project promoting road safety education
- Urban Road Safety Award (open to municipal, city and regional authorities)
Applicants are required to showcase how their initiative has effectively tackled a road safety issue. Any action, project, strategy, campaign, method, or approach yielding tangible and measurable outcomes qualifies for consideration.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 14 November 2024, in Brussels and online.
Background
Road safety in the EU has improved significantly in recent decades: the number of deaths on EU roads has fallen from around 50,000 twenty years ago to ca. 20,400 today. The EU is working towards achieving ‘Vision Zero’ – zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2050. In 2018, the EU set itself a 50% reduction target for road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. However, progress has stalled in recent years. Therefore more needs to be done by all relevant bodies – public authorities at EU, national, regional and local level, but also companies, NGOs, associations, educational institutions and individuals.
The European Road Safety Charter, initiated in 2004 by the European Commission, is the largest civil society platform on road safety. More than 4,000 public and private entities (companies of all types and sizes, automobile clubs, associations, schools, local authorities and others) have committed to the Charter. The Charter invites members to make a commitment to taking a specific measurable action within their area of responsibilities. Since 2006, the Excellence in Road Safety Awards have been presented to organisations that have carried out particularly interesting and effective road safety initiatives. Applicants for the 2024 award do not have to be existing members of the EU Road Safety Charter but should join up in order to apply.
