Commission adopts new rules for the operation of air balloons

On 13 March 2018, the European Commission adopted new rules for the air operation of balloons in EU skies.

The new rules are simpler, more flexible and proportionate to the complexity and risks of balloon operations. They are expected to maintain a high level of safety, while reducing the regulatory and administrative burden especially for balloon pilots. The Regulation is one of the projects of the General Aviation Road Map, established by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in partnership with the European Commission and other stakeholders.

The rules apply from 8 April 2019, giving authorities and operators enough time for their implementation.

Next steps

The rules for air operations with balloons are only a first step. Together with EASA, the Commission will expand the Balloon Rule Book by including simpler and proportionate rules for the licensing of balloon pilots. In addition, the Commission is in the process of establishing a similar ‘Sailplane Rule Book’.
