National implementation plan
The Latvian National Implementation Plan (NIP) was delivered in 2018. It is compliant with the ERTMS European Deployment Plan with the mentioned sections. However, no detailed plans are provided for some sections (mainly beyond-2023 sections).
According to the Latvian NIP:
- The entire network will be equipped with ERTMS Level 2.
- There is no information about the planned ERTMS deployment finish dates. In accordance with the NIP, the main goal is to maintain full interoperability with the neighbouring countries – Russia, Belarus, Lithuania and Estonia, keeping the 1520 mm railways track gauge network safe with the existing B class system (ALSN), in order to preserve existing interoperability during the transition period. In addition, the Latvian NIP provides information about plans to build a new 1435 mm railway line in Rail Baltica.
