The Atlantic corridor begins in Lisbon and the port of Sines and runs eastbound through Spain (via Badajoz-Elvas). Another branch goes towards Aveiro and Porto, and then eastbound to Spain via Vilar Formoso-Salamanca.

REFER is Portugal’s national provider operating in the railway network. This network has a part which belongs to the Atlantic corridor and consists of more than 1,500 km.

National implementation plan

The Portugal National Implementation Plan (NIP) was delivered in 2017. It does not give enough details to evaluate its compliance with the ERTMS European Deployment Plan.

According to the Portuguese NIP:

  • The entire network will be equipped with ERTMS Level 2.
  • Portugal states that ETCS + STM is required onboard; CONVEL will be gradually removed when it is outdated.
