Over 70% of EU citizens live in urban areas (cities, towns and suburbs) that generate 23% of all transport greenhouse gas emissions. To help the European Union reduce greenhouse gas emissions (by at least 55% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050), the Urban Mobility Framework initiative proposes measures to encourage EU Member States to develop urban transport systems that are safe, accessible, inclusive, affordable, smart, resilient, and emission-free.

Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, awarded Riga, Latvia, the European Mobility Week Award and the autonomous province of Bolzano/Bozen, in Italy, the Mobility Action Award, recognising leadership in sustainable urban mobility during 2025.
The Commission adopted its first progress report on the European declaration on cycling, showing strong momentum across the EU to boost cycling infrastructure and policies. The report confirms cycling’s role as a clean, affordable and health-boosting way to travel.
From 30 September to 2 October, EU Urban Mobility Days will take place in Vilnius.
From 16 to 22 September, more than 2,500 towns and cities will celebrate European Mobility Week.
Today the Commission publishes four new guidance documents, developed under the SMARTA-NET Project ‘Sustainable rural mobility in support of ecotourism’.
Last night, at the European Mobility Week Award ceremony, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, presented Bologna with the European Mobility Week Award and Pěšky městem, a Czech association, with the Mobility Action Award.
