The European Road Safety Charter, the largest civil society platform dedicated to road safety and led by the European Commission, has officially opened applications for the 2025 Excellence in Road Safety Awards. The awards recognise outstanding contributions from organisations, authorities, and companies within the Charter community towards fostering safer roads across Europe.
The award categories for 2025 are:
- best projects addressing driving under the influence or distracted driving;
- best road safety education projects;
- best projects addressing the road safety of older people;
- best projects applying technology to road safety;
- and the Urban Road Safety award which is open to local and regional authorities.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism said: “Last year alone, nearly 20,000 lives were lost in road crashes across the EU - an unacceptable toll that demands action. The Excellence in Road Safety Awards shine a spotlight on road safety and recognise those making a real difference in protecting lives. If you have best practices to share, we encourage you to join the European Road Safety Charter and apply for our awards. Together, we can drive change and make Europe’s roads safer for all. I look forward to your applications!”
Be part of the movement for safer roads - apply today! Joining the Charter is easy, and you’ll find a wealth of inspiration and good practices and a community dedicated to making Europe’s roads safer.
Applications close on Friday, 16 May (midnight CEST).
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 16 October 2025, in Brussels and online.
Background
The European Road Safety Charter, initiated in 2004 by the European Commission, is the largest civil society platform on road safety. More than 4,000 public and private entities (companies of all types and sizes, automobile clubs, associations, schools, local authorities and others) have committed to the Charter. The Charter invites members to make a commitment to taking a specific measurable action within their area of responsibilities. Since 2006, the Excellence in Road Safety Awards have been presented to organisations that have carried out particularly interesting and effective road safety initiatives. Applicants for the 2025 award do not have to be existing members of the EU Road Safety Charter but should join up in order to apply.
