Safe air navigation services allowing optimal use of Europe's airspace and consistent, high levels of safety in air travel are essential for the air transport system to operate smoothly. Safety is an essential pillar of the Single European Sky. The European Union has safety rules on the use of the airspace, ATM/ANS service provision, air traffic controllers and specialised staff, and rules on the safety and operability of related air navigation systems.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is tasked with monitoring the implementation of these rules, to certify pan-European services and to support the European strategy on the modernisation of air navigation.
