Infrastructure Managers

The Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) is the Greek national railway company which owns, maintains and operates all railway infrastructures in Greece except for rapid transit lines in Athens.

The main lines of the Greek railway network are electrified and are double track with standard gauge (1435 mm). This network has a part which belongs to the Orient / East - Med corridor including over 1,000 km.

National implementation plan

The Greek National Implementation Plan (NIP) was delivered in 2017. It is compliant with the ERTMS European Deployment Plan except for the Kalambaka – Igoumenitsa section, which is not mentioned.

According to the Greek NIP:

  • The entire network will be equipped with ERTMS Level 1.
  • The Greek network has never used a national automatic train protection system. Transfer from the existing Class B system to the class A ETCS system is therefore not an issue. However, there is a Class B radio system in place, which is expected to be decommissioned and replaced by GSMR with a transitional period (in which both systems will be available).
