Three defined Trans - European corridors run through the Hungarian Network:
- Orient / East - Med corridor, from the Slovakian to the Romanian border, via Budapest.
- Mediterranean corridor, from the Croatian border, north-east bound, to the Ukrainian border, via Budapest.
- Rhine - Danube corridor, from the Slovakian border to Budapest. Then there are two branches, one to Romania (parallel to the Orient – East Med corridor) and the other to Croatia and Serbia.
is the Hungarian National Infrastructure Manager. The Hungarian network, which belongs to the Core Network Corridors, consists of more than 1,440 km. Nevertheless, the Network Statement and allocation of capacity services are the responsibility of the . According to Hungarian legislation, VPE “is independent of Railway Undertakings and Infrastructure Managers, and has nationwide competence in allocating rail network capacity and in determining network access charges.”

(also known as RAABERBAHN) is a private Hungarian-Austrian joint enterprise operator that also manages its own rail network in the northern area of the Austrian-Hungarian border. Its network contains stretches of the Rhine - Danube and Orient / East - Med corridors. Thus, ERTMS/ETCS has already been introduced on the network.
National implementation plan
The Hungarian National Implementation Plan (NIP) was delivered in 2020. It not compliant with the ERTMS European Deployment Plan, because some lines have dates that are delayed compared to the EDP deadlines and some lines are not include in the NIP.
According to the Hungarian NIP:
- The complete network will be equipped with ERTMS Level 2, with the exception of lines currently equipped with pre-baseline 2 (i.e. a non-interoperable baseline) that will be updated to baseline 2 level 1.
- Hungary plans to stop using the analogous 160-Megahertz line radio system after finishing GSM-R Phase II projects (2255 km) and the Ferencváros- Kelebia- Serbian border section. In addition, it plans to use ETCS Level 2 with GSM-R on the TEN-T core network line after 2030.
- Class-B decommissioning is not specified in the NIP.
