Increasing the attractiveness of the transport sector
The transport sector’s most valuable asset is by far its people. However, certain parts of the sector are known for harsh working conditions (e.g. long working hours, periods spent away from home and low paid work). The workforce is rapidly ageing, lacks diversity, and significant staff shortages are already very visible in certain occupations. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the challenges facing transport workers. This situation risks deteriorating further and putting the strength and competitiveness of the sector at risk if no action is taken to make it more appealing to young people and women in particular.
This is why the European Commission, in its Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, announced initiatives to increase the attractiveness of the transport sector.
