Parental Leave Management

by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group

Parental Leave Management is a composite action. The obligatory maternity leave recognised by Italian law lasts 5 months with 100% remuneration. Optional parental leave (after the mandatory period) is paid by law at 30%, but Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane supplements the law by granting 100% remuneration for the first 30 days and 80% for the following 30 days.

The whole parental leave, including the two months with the improved remuneration, can be used by both mothers and fathers. In addition, in the case of a child's illness, unpaid by law, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane pays 100% for 30 days a year during the first 3 years of the child.

The attention of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group to women goes beyond maternity leave itself.

The Company fights against stereotypes regarding maternity leave, proposing training and team coaching, aimed at both mothers employees and their managers. This specific training – called “Worklife mamma” - supports women who are looking for better work life balance, but also helps them reflect on their professional path, rediscover their energy and provide them useful mindset tools to meet new professional and personal challenges. This training has also tangible benefits on the organisational culture, providing new insights to both managers and mothers employees.

During this training, mothers usually realize that they are the source of their own development. It is a very important training for all the organisation, allowing the Company to "use" maternity as an input to develop the relationship between a manager and her/his employees on new and more efficient terms.

Thanks to “Worklife mamma”, in 2016 FS Italiane Group developed guidelines for maternity leave management: a smart document for employees mom-to-be, their managers and HR staff.

In 2019-2020, the Company redesigned the training, inaugurating an e-learning training programme for both fathers and mothers of 0-3 kids, to boost awareness about the set of parental skills that can be used day by day at work.
