By advancing research and innovation solutions in sustainable urban mobility since 2002, the CIVITAS Initiative has become a flagship programme helping the European Commission achieve its mobility and transport goals for over two decades and deliver the European Green Deal.
Serving as a network of more than 300 cities, engaged politicians, urban mobility experts and youth participants, CIVITAS plays an active role in disseminating European Commission transport and mobility policy orientation and goals at the national, regional and local level, fostering political commitment, boosting collective expertise, facilitating peer exchange as well as providing networking and training.
It works around ten thematic areas: active mobility, behavioural change & mobility management, clean & energy efficient vehicles, collective passenger transport & shared mobility, demand & urban space management, integrated & inclusive planning, public participation & co-creation, road safety & security, smart & connected mobility, and urban logistics. It success has been in engaging local urban mobility communities in advancing research and innovation solutions for decarbonising transportation systems in the urban context.
